National Cake Week

Get busy in the kitchen and show off your cake baking skills for National Cake Week!

At Charter Walk, we love cake – so we are really excited about National Cake Week!  It is a movable feast that is always celebrated in the first full week of October – for 2017 it falls 2nd to 8th October. Founded in 2011 by a lovely Yorkshire woman, Lynn Hill (who also created the Clandestine Cake Club), the stated purpose of National Cake Week is to celebrate the joy of cake by slicing and sharing a whole cake with family and friends. A really sociable and delicious thing to do. You will find a cake at the heart of almost every formal and informal gathering, whether in the office, a family birthday party, or a wedding and who doesn’t love a slice or two?

Cakes in the Kitchen

At Charter Walk, we are quite partial to a lovely cake – and its also a great opportunity to spend more time in your luxury kitchen! Whether you are a cake baker or a cake eater, a designer kitchen can be the perfect place to enjoy sweet creations.

Kitchen larder for cakes – First off, somewhere to store your cake ingredients and tools. We’ve seen a huge increase in requests for larders in our bespoke kitchen installations.  A stylish larder is a great way to store all your baking equipment, including ingredients, spices cook books and your mixer.  Everything is hidden away from view to keep the kitchen looking tidy, but is easily accessible and organised for when you need it.

Kitchen gadgets for cakes – whether you have a top of the range multi function stand mixer, or your grandma’s old two whisk hand blender, let the mixer do the work for you.  The mixer takes the hard work out of mixing cakes and batter, and can even knead bread dough so you don’t have to.  If making cakes brings back painful memories of dead arms and aching hands, then a stand mixer will be something of a revelation. They can be purchased for between £99 to £300.

Kitchen appliances for cakes – A free standing range or a built in appliance – either way you need an oven that you can rely on to produce great cakes every time!  When choosing your oven there are several factors to consider, such as how much space you have, energy efficiency and the multitude of different types of oven now available (single, double, freestanding, electric, gas, etc).  Also, ovens now also offer additional features such as crispers, auto-cook programmes, cleaning cycles, LCD controls and even WiFi connectivity!  If cake baking is your passion then you might want to consider an oven that includes a setting especially for baking and roasting with the addition of steam. At Charter Walk Kitchen Living we specialise in Siemens appliances and Range free standing cookers so we’d be happy to advise you on your choice of kitchen appliance.

Worktop for cakes – If you prefer a pie to a cake, then carefully consider your type of worktop.  Whilst wood looks great, if you are rolling out pastry a nice cool surface such as quartz, granite, marble or even stainless steel would be a better choice. Your kitchen worktop choice can match your kitchen cabinets or compliment them by using a different material or colour in your designer kitchen.  Have a look at our website for some inspiration.

Kitchen Island for cakes – The kitchen is the hub of the home, so when the scrumptious smell of baked cakes has filled the house, everyone can gather in the kitchen to enjoy them.  A kitchen island is a great focal point as well as providing additional storage and worktop space.  Kitchen islands are also ideal for informal entertaining – a breakfast bar and seating area can be easily added to your kitchen, extending the available space and letting you talk to your guests while you cook or serve the cakes.

Cake Choices

Of course your kitchen guests are likely to want a choice of cake – but it’s so easy to take the basic sponge ingredients of flour, sugar, fat and eggs and enhance them with lemons, oranges, nuts, fresh fruit, dried fruit, chocolate, coffee, spices, treacle – or whatever else takes your fancy – to create a whole sweet trolley load of cake.

We found a recent article which listed 5 great recipes you can try at home – we particularly liked the look of the Rhubarb and Pistachio, and kids are sure to love the Pinata Cake!

National Cake Week is the time to celebrate the humble cake in all its glory. Make the most of your luxury kitchen by cooking and sharing your cakes with friends.  Charter Walk design and install bespoke luxury kitchens – we’d be more than happy to talk through your ideas to see how we can help.
